Santa Monica Memories
Sometimes a few words from a song or clips from a movie reminds you of a special christmas memory...
For me, there were a few movies and songs that really bring back memories of the Santa Monica Christmas. I've included Amazon links and widgets if you're interested in buying and supporting this effort. But mainly these are the songs and movies that make me remember The Santa Monica Christmas.
"Oh Santa" by Mariah Carey didn't really strike me at first as a good song. But I played it on my way to the shelter each morning on my mp3 player. It began to grow on me.
But then everything changed one day at Santa Monica Place, the big shopping mall by the beach. I was going up the escalator to see Lexi at the Skechers shoe store and the song played on the mall's PA system as I rode up the escalator. It just stuck with me.
Now whenever I hear that song, it takes me back to that moment in Santa Monica Place, over Christmas.
I went to Barnes and Noble each day after serving at the shelter. It was a great place along with the library to kick, back, relax, and wind down. In amongst the Christmas videos was a movie I had seen many years ago - The Munsters Scary Little Christmas.
The movie was a Fox made-for-TV film and told the story of Christmas at the Munsters from Eddie's perspective. He'd lost faith in the whole magic of Chrismas but eventually his father Herman has to save Christmas - with Santa.
I don't know why this movie stuck with me the way it did, but it did. It came in a giftwrap packaging with a bonus CD of christmas tunes!,
One night as I was flipping channels one day, I saw a bit of Christmas Cupid starring Christina Milian. I'd seen her in Smallville a year or two back, as well as some other films. The clip I saw was the opening scene where Mariah Carey's song was playing. So that movie also stuck in my head for some reason and reminds me of this time.
Lastly, I had a routine of watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. I hadn't watched them in nearly 20 years. It was fun in the evening to watch them, over an Italian Grinder sandwhich. Memories of Santa Monica during the Santa Monica Christmas.

PS - Special thanks to Santa Monica Place - where I spent my Christmas off hours, the Jolly Roger Hotel who made accomodations easy, and the Santa Monica City Council who helped point me in the right direction to do all of this in 2010.
